Tips for Creating a Study Guide for Your Class

How to make a study guide:

1. Organize and write down key themes from your class notes. What topics were covered in class?

2. Using your textbook, write down key vocabulary terms and the way they are defined in that chapter. Was there a class discussion or class work on any of those terms? If so, what does it add to your understanding of that term? Write it down.

3. Are there any charts, graphs, pictures, or other visuals you can use to help you understand or remember key concepts as you study? Add those.

4. Can you make an outline of the most important ideas of the course? Then fill it in with details under each main point?

5. Consider practicing writing answers to essay questions. What questions are in your textbook that you can use as inspiration? What about from class? What questions can you write that help you express your knowledge, and if relevant, opinions, on the main topics covered in the class and/or your class work and/or your textbook readings?

Study Buddies

Why consider working with a partner or a small group?

A good study buddy can help you get focused and even find your enthusiasm for a difficult course. You can encourage each other. Also, you learn a lot from "teaching" your buddy. It helps to speak what you learn out loud. If you can't express it, you don't know it. So it helps you see where the gaps in your knowledge or understanding are. You might also learn some new strategies for mastering the course material. You might understand things better when you get a perspective different than your own.

How should you set up a study session?

1. Agree on a time and place. Set aside a limited amount of time so you can stay focused.

2. Share notes and set a plan for what you will cover.

3. Be completely ready for your session. Read that chapter, take those notes!

4. Quiz each other on the material, but also set aside time to discuss it.
